The most effective way

Sometimes I have trouble starting.

Especially when it's new and I'm not sure how it's going to go.

I have a video story about that...

Transcript:

I dunno about y'all, but sometimes I have a hard time starting things, especially if it's a new thing that I'm not really sure how it's going to go. And nobody likes to feel that feeling of failure straight out the gate, but it's kind of okay to set the bar really low for that first time, and I forget that sometimes. So I like to remember a favorite quote, and that is by Amelia Earhart, and it's just a fabulous quote for this kind of situation. She says The most effective way to do it is to do it. And she doesn't say the best way to do it, and she doesn't say the most successful way to do it. She says "The most effective way to do it is to do it", and it's a hard truth, but it is super true. The other thing I like to do is surround myself with little triggers for that, and that for me comes in the form of art.

And I'm going to show you a couple of things. So these are artworks that my daughter created during Covid, except for the one small one. This one, my favorite one, this little chimera, which is like part moose, part penguin, part turtle, I don't know, part frog eyeballs. And this, she made exactly two years before she started making these other beautiful things and sassy things and amazing things. But if she hadn't started with this fanciful random chimera, I don't know that she would've sort of gotten the feel in her hands for clay and had to manipulate it in order to dream up these wonderful things. Similarly, this is a sculpture that my mom made when she was in college and she was pretty proud of it. So I'm really happy to have it. And I just couldn't believe my luck when I found also this sculpture that she made when she was a child, which I don't know if she intended, but I think it has some of the same shapes. And so we are just all developing all the time, is kind of what I think. So I don't know what this means for me or for you, except for there's possibility in everything if you just do it, and

the most effective way to do it is to do it.
